South Africa is a premier African tourist destination that offers something for everyone, regardless of the time of year you choose to visit. The country's unparalleled safari experience is one of the best on the continent, with a diverse range of wildlife roaming freely in vast unfenced game reserves such as the famous Kruger National Park. The ever-changing scenery is a delight for the eyes, from the semi-deserts of the Karoo and Kalahari to the stunning peaks of the Drakensberg range, the picturesque Cape Winelands, and the breathtaking Blyde River Canyon. It's no surprise that Conservation International declared South Africa one of the world's 17 mega-diverse destinations in 1998.

South Africa's multicultural inhabitants are a fascinating blend of African, Asian, and European cultures, contributing to its nickname as the "Rainbow Nation." The friendly and hospitable locals speak a variety of languages, including English, which is one of 11 official languages. The country's gourmet restaurants are world-class, and food enthusiasts can enjoy the best of the best with Ikewana's offer to dine at the country's crème de la crème.

Despite a difficult past, South Africans take great pride and love for their country, and their positivity and warmth are sure to make visitors feel welcome. So pack your bags and experience the wonders of South Africa for yourself!

Facts about South Africa

CAPITAL

South Africa has three capital cities: Pretoria for administration, Cape Town for legislation, and Bloemfontein for judiciary, each playing a significant role in the country's governance and cultural heritage.

CURRENCY

South Africa's currency is the Rand (ZAR), divided into 100 cents. Banknotes range from R200 to R10, while coins range from R5 to 5c.

LANGUAGE

In South Africa, there are 11 official languages recognized by the government: Afrikaans, English, isiNdebele, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, siSwati, Tshivenda, and Xitsonga.

ELECTRICITY

In South Africa, the electrical current is 220/240 volts at 50 cycles per second. To use your appliances, it's recommended to bring a three-point round-pin adapter plug, which can be purchased at major airports.

WHAT TO WEAR

South Africa is a sunny country, so it's important to wear sunblock even during the winter months. It's also recommended to wear a hat, sunglasses, and comfortable walking shoes. When going on a game viewing trip, neutral-toned clothing is preferable, but don't worry about going overboard with your wardrobe. Layering up with warm clothing is important for early morning game drives. For evening outings such as dining at an upmarket restaurant or seeing a show, smart-casual attire is the norm.

WHEN TO GO

South Africa is a destination with so much to offer that any time of the year is great for a visit. However, if you want to experience the wildlife and go on safari in Kruger National Park, we recommend visiting during the dry season from May to November. During this time, the shorter grass makes for better visibility, and the young are born around November/December. The dry season also means fewer mosquitoes and a lower risk of malaria. In Cape Town, the dry summer season is the best time to visit for activities like browsing the markets, hiking up Table Mountain, and enjoying the beaches. Keep in mind that peak summer season (Christmas holidays) is popular among local tourists, so if you prefer something less crowded, consider visiting between September and November or March to April.

AIRPORTS

South Africa is accessible through over 70 international airlines, with South African Airways serving major international air routes. Flights range from 10 to 17 hours, landing at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, Cape Town International Airport, or King Shaka International Airport in Durban. Domestic airports include Bloemfontein, East London, George, Kimberley, Port Elizabeth, and Upington. Additionally, there are scheduled flights to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport and Skukuza Airport.

GETTING AROUND

Driving in South Africa is a convenient and popular way of getting around, especially if you plan to explore the country's vast natural beauty. Most roads are tarred and well-maintained, but be prepared to encounter gravel roads in rural areas. You will need a valid international driver's license to drive in South Africa, and remember to drive on the left-hand side of the road. Safety belts must be worn at all times, and using a mobile phone while driving is only allowed in hands-free mode. Speed limits are clearly marked, and toll fees apply on certain national roads. Petrol stations are widespread, making it easy to refuel your vehicle. If you prefer not to drive, luxury inter-city bus services such as Greyhound and Trans-Lux are available, as well as Uber taxis. Metrobus buses are also available in some cities, but they are not recommended for tourists.

AREA

South Africa is situated at the southernmost point of the African continent and boasts a vast surface area covering 1 219 602 km2. It is home to a diverse range of ecosystems including bushveld, grasslands, forests, deserts, and towering mountain ranges, as well as expansive unspoiled beaches and coastal wetlands. The country's coastline stretches over 3,000 km and is influenced by two oceans - the warm Mozambique-Agulhas current on the east and south coasts, and the chilly Benguela current flowing northwards along the west.
